As I mentioned in my last blog, New Hope hosted a team of 5 teachers from Washington, DC to plan and lead a week-long teacher development training for the 15 teachers of New Hope Academy. It was an incredible week of training. One of my favorite quotes was from Teacher Faith, “We have learned more in one week than in 2 years of formal education in Kenya.”
Together, these 5 women bring decades of experience in education. The team included classroom teachers, a principal and a special educator bringing their expertise to a group of teachers that are hungry for knowledge and skill to better their teaching and improve the lives of their students. The training included learning how to breakdown skills in a standard, backwards planning, and writing a SMART objective. They also did fun, team-building activities and learned other practical skills they can incorporate into their classrooms immediately like checks for understanding, attention grabbers and celebrations. At the end of the week the New Hope Teachers participated in “teach-backs”. They taught lessons about Kenya to our visitors. I learned a lot about Kenya!
